Unaccompanied Minors and Separated Refugee Children in Sweden: An Outlook on Demography, Education and Employment

Aycan Çelikaksoy and Eskil Wadensjö - The Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA)

This report provides a general background to the demographic makeup of the population of unaccompanied minors who have migrated to Sweden, including an examination of their educational and employment characteristics. The report is part of the work of the “Unaccompanied Minors and Separated Refugee Children in Sweden” project, funded by the European Refugee Fund. The report looks at the whole population of unaccompanied minors who were registered in Sweden from 2003 to 2012, analyzing the demographic data of this group (age, sex, country of origin, municipality in Sweden in which they now live, etc) as well as how these minors have fared since their arrival in Sweden in terms of health, work, education, and more. The data are collected from the registers of Statistics Sweden, the Migration Board and the National Board of Health and Welfare. Future reports of this project will discuss the unaccompanied minors’ education and employment situation in more detail, in addition to issues concerning health and housing.
