International Social Service

This edition of the ISS Special Series on the Draft UN Guidelines on Alternative Care features the child protection system in Chile.  The regional application of polices and national strategies for the protection of children has enabled the country to significantly reduce institutionalization of children nationally.  In keeping with the Guidelines on Alternative Care, the SENAME program is committed to broader inclusion of children within the protection system – the program reports a 36% increase in children being monitored by the child protection system.  Additionally the national program emphasizes a commitment to deinstitutionalization through family preservation and strong kinship care.  They report a 35.7% decrease in institutionalization of children in a 15 year period.

The document also includes Spanish and French translations.
