Matilde Luna, Mara Tissera Luna & María Sánchez Brizuela

This preliminary report analyzes the practice of foster care in Argentina. The material will be useful for the development of foster care services in the Latin American region, due to the fact that the situation of foster care in Argentina can be seen as a model of the current regional context. This report adds to other previous publications issued by RELAF, such as “Latin American Report: Situation of children without parental care or at risk of losing it. Contexts, causes and responses” and “Document August 2011: Institutionalized childhood and adolescence. Making serious Human Rights violations visible.” All of these publications are available at the RELAF web site www.relaf.org

The contents of this report include information on the current characteristics of foster care in the Latin American region, as well as about its development potential and prospects. The report also includes definitions of key concepts, descriptions of the characteristics of foster care in Argentina, examples of four governmental foster care programs, themes on the agenda of the rights of the child that are related to foster care, and a discussion section.
