Nepal’s Orphanage Scam: Growing Trend for “Voluntourism” Linked to Child Exploitation

Pete Pattisson, The Guardian

This video shines a light on the exploitation of children in orphanages in Nepal and how it can be perpetuated by well-meaning foreign visitors. According to the video, parents are often coerced into sending their children to orphanages with the promise of an education for their children. These orphanages, populated with children who often are not orphaned, attract the donations of foreign visitors and volunteers. Those funds then often go to the owners of the homes rather than to the vulnerable children themselves.
