Abstract
Children of color are over-represented in the child welfare system. Research suggests that disproportionality is predominately attributable to the resource poor environments in which these children are raised. However, it is important to understand whether the child welfare system is able to diminish these societal level inequities, and consequently disproportionality, by reducing racial/ethnic disparities in outcomes of youth exiting state care. Encouragingly, research in this area has found few racial/ethnic differences in the outcomes of former foster youth. However, these…
Abstract
Background: The number of migrant workers in Indonesia has been increasing over the years. Most of the migrant workers are females with children, creating a huge number of left-behind children (LBC). The issue of LBC has become important to discuss because LBC tends to experience more emotional and behavioral problems than non-LBC. The aim of this study was to assess and compare emotional and behavioral problems between LBC and non-LBC in Indonesia. This paper analyzes data from a project by the Community Mental Health Research Group from the Faculty of…

This report presents the main conclusions from the 2019 Small Voices Big Dreams Technical Manual, which outlines in great detail the perceptions and opinions of children and adolescents from all over the world regarding the multiple dimensions of violence exercised against them. This research does not intend to replicate existing research about the causes or the effects of violence on children. Rather, it is a comprehensive analysis—by children—of the violence that is a reality for so many young people across the globe.
Abstract
Children who enter the care system have suffered abuse and/or neglect, and because of that, they are more likely to have a range of complex needs. Carers (either being foster, kinship, birth or adoptive parents) might struggle caring for these children if they are not appropriately and timely supported. This might lead to placement disruption and instability, and in turn affect the wellbeing of the children (as well as the carers themselves). Article 18.2 in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child states that ‘States Parties shall render appropriate assistance to…
