This three-paper dissertation examines the overrepresentation of Black children reported to child protection services in Canada. The first and second papers examine rates of service disparities using clinical-administrative data provided by a child protection agency for a sample of Black, White, and other visible minority children residing in Montreal, Quebec. Findings from the first paper reveal that compared to White children, Black children’s protection reports were five times more likely to be screened in, substantiated, and brought to court. Black children were also five times more…
This report was produced by Comhlámh and the Volunteering and Orphanages Working Group (OWG). The OWG was set up in 2016 by Comhlámh and a number of Volunteer Sending Agencies party to Comhlámh’s Code of Good Practice who were concerned at the adverse effects of institutional care on children and the particularly harmful impact of international volunteering in orphanages. Since then, the OWG has worked to raise awareness of the detrimental effects of international volunteering in orphanages and to promote and support the transition to family and community-based care.
The report explores…
Article 4 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child stipulates that state parties have a positive obligation to implement the necessary legal measures to secure the rights recognised in the Convention. The CRC Committee has stated that incorporation is its preferred method of implementation. In Sweden, the issue of incorporation has been the subject of a lengthy and contentious debate. This article aims to unpack the reasons for this. It is suggested that technical-legal arguments against the incorporation of the crc are grounded in and intertwined with cultural-legal…

An exploration of social worker relationships, roles and the wellbeing of children in long-term care
Abstract
This study explores the social work role with children in long-term care, focusing on how relationships between children and social workers can support wellbeing. There has been increasing interest in relationship-based social work practice since the publication of the Munro Review (2011b) and this study helps to advance our understanding of relationship-based practice in the context of work with children in care. Using a critical realist methodology, the social work role and relationships with children in care were explored within their wider ecological environment. Semi-…
Background: Reunification of looked after children with their birth parents is the most common route to permanency for looked after children in the UK (Department for Education, 2018). Less is known about the current evidence base for reunification practice in the UK.
Objective: This review aimed to identify, appraise and synthesise published literature concerned with the reunification of looked after children with their birth parents…

The original dataset consisted of 428 measured variables taken from 600…
