ABSTRACT
Young people leaving care have been the subject of international research in the last decade, whilst in Africa studies are still few. The ability of young people to transition successfully from institutional care to independent living in society has become a policy concern. This is because of the documented poor outcomes of care leavers internationally and in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study (a thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Master of Social Science in Social Policy Degree at University College Cork, Ireland) explored the factors influencing the…
Abstract
Families experiencing physical abuse and/or neglect are at risk of continued difficulties that may involve long-term monitoring by Child Protective Services (CPS) and perhaps even removal of the child. Interventions needed to help the family remain intact safely and reduce both the clinical challenges they are experiencing and risk of further maltreatment will need to meet the multiple needs of all family members and involve a positive, collaborative working relationship with CPS. If services that are typically provided at outpatient clinics are used, the CPS case worker may be…
Abstract
Comparative international data on patterns of inequality in child welfare interventions, for example, the proportion of children about whom there are substantiated child protection concerns or who are in out-of-home care, are far less developed than data about inequalities in health. Few countries collect reliable, comprehensive information and definitions, methods of data collection and analysis are rarely consistent. The four UK countries (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) provide a potential ‘natural experiment’ for comparing intervention patterns. This study…
Abstract
Although a future focus is recognized as a contributing factor to resilience, the content of future focus is seldom explored. Care-leavers in South Africa exit the statutory system and enter into adulthood largely unsupported. Their futures are hampered by limited preparation for leaving care, the absence of follow-up services and contextual factors such as high unemployment rates. Having a well-developed future focus may contribute to better outcomes for care-leavers. Drawing on data from a small qualitative study carried out in four child and youth care centres in a town in the…
Every day in Oklahoma, USA, women are arrested and incarcerated in local jails waiting— sometimes for weeks, months, a year, or more—for the disposition of their cases. Most of these women are mothers with minor children.
Drawing from more than 160 interviews with jailed and formerly jailed mothers, substitute caregivers, children, attorneys, service providers, advocates, jail officials, and child welfare employees, this report shows how pretrial detention can snowball into neverending family separation as mothers navigate court systems and insurmountable financial burdens assessed by…

Results:
We included 20 studies published in and before April 2018. Our review indicates that interventions for grandparent caregivers have positive effects in regard to…
Introduction
On their 18th birthday children in custody of provincial Child and Family Services (CFS) age out, and are adults in control of their own care. An additional extended transitional services program was introduced several years ago to address gaps in the provicion of, and access to, adult social services during this change.
Objectives and Approach
Using linked population based data from the Manitoba Population Research Data Repository, children in the custody of CFS who turned 18 during a 10 year study period were compared to children…
ABSTRACT
In The Gambia like all nations, drug abuse is seen as a social and health problem that has many serious implications for the physical, social, psychological and intellectual development of the victims more especially, the children. Therefore, it continues to be a concern to families, community leaders, educators, social workers, health care professionals, academics, government and its development partners. Though there some studies on drug abuse, there is none on children and drug abuse focusing on the street children the most vulnerable category. Street children are hypothesized…
