'Baby bin' to save South Africa's unwanted children

An organization called Door of Hope has offered a “baby bin,” where parents can anonymously drop off babies, in Johannesburg since 1999, says this article from BBC News. Parents can place the baby in a small metal hatch in the wall of the building in Hillbrow Street, Berea, a suburb of Johannesburg. Once the infant is placed on the mattress in the hatch, an alarm goes off and staff at the Door of Hope are alerted. "What we do gives desperate mothers and their children an alternative,” says a staff member.
