The Institute of Social Work of Nigeria has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to sign a bill establishing a National Council of Social Work, according to this article. The Executive Director of the institute, Dr John Emaimo, cites many reasons for the need to legitimize the social work profession in Nigeria, including efficient service delivery for vulnerable children and addressing issues like "baby factories" and other forms of child trafficking, as well as the "improper care" of children in orphanages and adopted children. The bill has passed in Nigeria's house of Representatives and the Senate and now awaits the president's signature. "But we are waiting for the president to assent the bill and once it is assented we can now swing into action," Emaimo said.
