Second ICRC Comment on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration Focus on Immigration Detention

International Committee of the Red Cross

The International Committee of the Red Cross has released a comment on the Global Compacts including three key messages, one of which relates to the detention of children and family separation. It reads: "States should commit to ending the detention of children and family separation for immigration-related reasons – in our experience, the best interests of the child are not served by such detention." The ICRC urges states to "treat children as children first and foremost" and warns of the harmful physical and psychological impacts of detention on children.
