Abstract
This paper presents the findings of an exploratory research study of foster care youth residing in group homes in a mid-Atlantic state in the USA. The aims of the present study were to (1) describe youth characteristics, (2) explore whether baseline functioning differed by gender or ethnicity, (3) explore predictors of cross-time differences in psychosocial functioning, and (4) explore predictors of later functioning, specifically age, gender, and length of stay. Psychosocial functioning at two time points (i.e., T1 = admission into group home; T2 = current or discharge) in 180…
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
By the end of 2011, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) began to see a steady rise in the number of Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) from Central America, particularly from the Northern Triangle countries—El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala—arriving to the US-Mexico border. The number of children entering the United States from these countries more than doubled during fiscal year (FY) 2012 and continued to grow through FY 2014. In FY 2013, CBP apprehended over 35,000 children. That number almost doubled to 66,127 in FY 2014, with Central American…
This report from Retrak provides information on how to best count and develop estimates of the number of street-connected children in a particular area. The report includes an overview of the rationale behind collecting this data, the challenges in collecting this data and in defining “street children,” and the methodologies most suitable for this type of data collection. The report also offers advice on how to engage street children and gain their trust in order to conduct such studies. The report offers suggestions on how to work with limited resources, and how to ensure accuracy and…

This article draws on Promundo and RWAMREC’s programmatic experiences in Rwanda of implementing MenCare+, a gender transformative approach to engaging young and adult men (ages 15–35) in caregiving, maternal, newborn, and child health, and sexual and reproductive health and rights. We present initial results from fathers’ groups with more than 600 men, including the impact of participation in these groups on men’s participation in care work. The results confirm the importance for practitioners’ planning strategies to engage fathers to think beyond men’s token participation in care work, to…
Abstract
Objective The primary goal was to examine whether Malawi Social Cash Transfer Pilot Scheme, initially implemented in a rural district in central Malawi, improved health outcomes for children aged 6–17. Secondary goals were to examine the effects of individual child- (orphan status and gender) and household-level factors (number of working-age adults and sick adults) on health outcomes. Another secondary goal was to examine whether orphan status modified the cash transfer effect on health outcomes.
Methods This multilevel study used…

This report presents the findings from the Working Group’s review. The review focuses on data that have been collected in low and middle-income countries, however, some higher-income countries were reviewed as well. The report includes an…
In this paper, Retrak outlines its approach to conducting outreach work with children living and working on the streets. Retrak suggests that effective outreach work should recognize children’s experiences of broken relationships and understand the importance of street life and peer relationships to those children. The paper makes recommendations for outreach activities and outreach workers and offers an outline of principles of outreach work and outreach aim and processes.
