Orphanage closures touted by gov’t, but issues continue

Taing Vida and Charles Parkinson - The Phnom Penh Post

According to this article from the Phnom Penh Post, the government of Cambodia has announced that 11 orphanages in Cambodia have been closed since the year 2011. The children living in those institutions have since been returned to their families, or else moved to new facilities. The article reports that many of these institutions had not been meeting basic standards of care and children had suffered abuse and exploitation while residing there. Additionally, the article highlights the concerns of those in the field that there are even more orphanages in Cambodia that are unregistered and, therefore, lack oversight of their operations - putting the children at even greater risk.
