This article by Ellen Livingood in Volume 13, Issue 9 of Postings describes the ways in which Christian churches and faith communities are moving away from orphanage volunteering to supporting other forms of care for children. "Often orphanage ministry is one of a church’s most-popular global missions efforts because there is such an emotional attachment to needy children," says Livingood. "Yet disturbing facts about the orphanage model, especially the impact of Western short-term ministries in Majority World orphanages, are causing many churches to rethink their…

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The American Bar Association’s policymaking body has voted in favor of a resolution supporting the U.S. Interior Department as it works to uncover the troubled legacy of federal boarding schools that sought to assimilate Indigenous youth into white society.
The resolution, adopted Monday by delegates at the bar association’s annual meeting, calls for the Biden administration and Congress to fully fund the initiative and provide subpoena power to the Interior Department as it gathers and reviews reams of records related to the schools.
In this episode of Full Story, a podcast from the Guardian, Rachel Humphreys speaks to Barry Kennedy, a survivor of the Marieval residential school where 751 bodies were found, who tells her: “Those are my alumni, and I have to speak to ensure that this will never, ever happen again.” He describes his experiences at the school and how they shaped the rest of his life. And as he contemplates those memories in the context of the new discoveries, he describes the importance of holding on to cultural traditions that the Canadian state once sought to eradicate.
"In Canada, more than 1,000 unmarked graves have been discovered on the grounds of former church-run residential schools, where an estimated 150,000 First Nations children were sent as part of a campaign of forced assimilation for more than a century until 1996.
A historic truth and reconciliation commission was conducted in the 2000s. In 2015 it concluded that the…
