Save the Children, the Better Care Network and UNICEF, in collaboration with key regional stakeholders, hosted a Conference on Family Strengthening and Alternative Care in Sub-Saharan Francophone Africa.
The Conference took place May 10 and 11, 2012 in Dakar, Senegal and was the first meeting of its kind in Sub-Saharan Francophone and Lusophone Africa providing an occasion for the high-level launching of the Guidelines on Alternative Care of Children to a Francophone and Lusophone audience. The conference hosted 128 delegates from 17 African countries.
The event provided an opportunity to mobilise key actors to:

Promote the Guidelines on Alternative Care of Children, their dissemination and use and, discuss how they can be adapted to the regional/country contexts;

Share experiences and lessons learned in supporting family-based care across the region;

Identify the specific nature of care issues across the region and the priority requirements to address them;

Make the care situation of children without appropriate care in Sub-Saharan Francophone Africa more visible ;

Explore opportunities for future information exchange, coordination, and collaboration between different Francophone child protection actors; and

Launch an alternative care platform for Sub-Saharan Francophone Africa countries
