Expert Paper: International Volunteering and Child Sexual Abuse

Kathryn van Doore, Florence Martin & Anna McKeon - Better Volunteering Better Care

This paper accompanies the Global Study on Sexual Exploitation of Children in Travel and Tourism, a report from ECPAT. The paper provides an overview of international volunteering, or “voluntourism,” and its potential to create opportunities for child sexual exploitation, particularly in residential care centres. The paper presents case studies of child sexual abuse in residential care centres (“orphanages”) in Nepal and Kenya, as well as some promising practices in addressing this issue around the world.
