To help answer commonly asked questions—and to provide an overview of an understandably confusing topic— Next Generation Nepal (NGN) has prepared this briefing paper in which NGN answers the most frequently asked questions we receive about orphanage trafficking and orphanage voluntourism. The paper addresses the general situation around orphanage voluntourism in Nepal, the definition of “voluntourism,” some of the reasons those from developed countries want to volunteer in developing settings, why so many children are placed in institutions in Nepal, the effects of institutionalization on children and whether or not children in “orphanages” are actually orphans, among other questions.
