The phenomenon of volunteer tourism has evolved substantially over the past thirty years. This article discusses the challenges in research and practice that have grown out of this evolution. As the volunteer tourism changes, so do the debates regarding the practice. McGehee notes three areas of focus: 1) the value of the experience; 2) volunteer motivation; 3) the need for standardized theoretical approach to the study and research of voluntourism. Researchers are just initializing the study of this topic in three areas. These areas are: a) interface of technology and volunteer tourism; b) monitoring and maintaining the quality of volunteer tourism and certifications attached thereto; and the role of religion and spirituality in volunteer tourism. Each of these areas have their own issues and challenges. Ultimately, volunteer tourism research should work to improve the situation for all parties concerned.
