Integrating Early Childhood Development and Violence Prevention - A Landscape Analysis: Networks, Campaigns, Movements, and Initiatives

Cassie Landers Ed.D., MPH Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University

This review aims at gaining a better understanding of the landscape of, and support efforts by, the Early Childhood Development and Violence Prevention communities through identifying networks, campaigns, movements, and initiatives. The review highlights gaps and opportunities and offers recommendations. The results of the review were drawn from a mapping exercise supported by the UBS Optimus Foundation, through the Global Alliance for Children. Methods used in this research are semi-structured interviews of key informants; a desk review of research reports and publications; and identification of global and national networks, campaigns, and social movements.

The review highlights several programs worldwide that address violence against children, including those that focus on family strengthening and the prevention of family separation. The review also found that there are a growing number of networks, including the Better Care Network, that address issues related to the prevention of violence against children and the promotion of optimal early child health and development. The review also indicated that some networks have a global scope and include multi-sector partners while others operate at regional or national levels.
