Case Study on Improving HIV Testing and Services for Children Orphaned or Made Vulnerable by HIV (OVC): Approaches of the Expanded Impact Program in Zimbabwe

Francesca Stuer & Kate Greenaway - 4Children/Catholic Relief Services

In this case study, Coordinating Comprehensive Care of Children (4Children) documents and evaluates the work of the World Education/Bantwana Expanded IMPACT program in Zimbabwe. The case study is one of three case studies developed by 4Children at the request of the Office of HIV and AIDS at USAID to share and promote learning from OVC programs which have implemented successful interventions to increase HIV testing and services (HTS) for children.

This case study includes a background on ZImbabwe and the context of its health and social welfare services, an introduction to the IMPACT program, as well as program results, including promising practices and remaining challenges.

The IMPACT program is implemented by a consortium of 14 local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working at the community level and involves exisiting systems at the community, district, and national levels - including child protection. Family strengthening is also an important component to the IMPACT program, which supports HIV-positive clients and their families through regular home visits with health and nutrition counseling and psychosocial support, in addition to HTS.
