Independent Living Literature Review

Retrak

Retrak has released a literature review on independent living programmes in an effort to understand the needs of young people coming of age on the streets. The research revealed that there is little evidence of good practice regarding independent living programmes for children on the streets. Thus, the review draws on literature relating to care leavers' experiences, which are similar to those of their peers on the streets. The literature review highlights the need for independent living programmes to include support in: building positive relationships with committed and trusted adults who can act as mentors; gaining education, skills and employment; obtaining housing, and having a place to return to in moments of crisis; and addressing stigma and prejudice which can lead to young people being socially excluded.
