Tens of millions of children around the world are exposed to profound adversity early in life. They may grow up poor, or be exposed to domestic or neighborhood violence. Some kids must grow up in a family with a significant mental health issues. Other factors that can harm their growth: food scarcity, lack of clean water and poor sanitation. As part of NOVA's look at childhood education, Dr. Charles Nelson came to this Boston Cafe Sci to share his research on the effects of early profound adversity on child and brain development.
