According to this Country Fact Sheet focusing Greece, there is no database holding data on children in alternative care in Greece. In 2015, Opening Doors conducted a nationwide mapping study, which found that Greece had scattered public and private institutions and other residential housing throughout the country with little to no quality control. The main reasons children were reported to be in care were due to disability, neglect, and abuse. The foster care system is woefully behind what it should be. The current refugee crisis has dramatically increased the number of unaccompanied refugee and migrant children in Greece.
