Alternative Child Care and Deinstitutionalisation in Asia: Findings of a desk review

Catherine Flagothier -- Catherine Flagothier

This desk review maps the issues of alternative care and deinstitutionalisation in Asia. It examines the reasons children are being placed in care, evaluates the types of care in the region, and discusses regional efforts towards deinstitutionalisation.

The review found several reasons children are being placed in care.  These reasons include poverty; education; orphan hood; being affected by HIV/AIDS; migration of one or both parents; natural man-made disasters; cultural factors; gender inequality and discrimination; violence, abuse, neglect and trafficking; offer of residential care; and disability.
