Unit Costs of Health and Social Care 2013

Lesley Curtis- Personal Social Services Research Unit, University of Kent

This report is a compilation of health and social care costs in the UK for the year 2013. The report includes environmental costs as well as the costs of care for the elderly, the costs of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) services, cost of services for people with mental health problems, and so on.

The report includes a featured article on the cost of residential child care by Jonathan Stanley and Andrew Rome. The article aims to shed more light on the costs of residential child care and highlight the lack of information which may lead to “commissioning decisions being dominated more by cost than appropriateness or quality,” says the article. The article presents a conceptual framework for better understanding the sub-segments of the residential child care market and provides a brief comparison of the unit costs of independent versus local authority children’s homes. The framework helps to underline the conclusions of the article: that more detailed information at the sub-segment level is necessary to understanding the “market needs” and making informed decisions regarding residential child care services.

The report also includes information on the costs of care homes and foster care for children in the UK, as well as for parenting and preventive programs, adoption, support for children in care, and services for children with disabilities.
