Chapter 4: Establishing a sense of belonging for looked after children: the journey from fear and shame to love and belonging

Jim Walker - Towards Belonging: Negotiating New Relationships for Adopted Children and Those in Care

Abstract

This chapter explores the idea of belonging through the lens of attachment theory. I believe that attachment theory can offer many insights into belonging. When we are accepted and loved by others, we experience feelings of warmth and belonging. In contrast, rejection by others can cause feelings of fear, shame, and loneliness. Attachment theory would argue that the roots of belonging lie in the early years of life and in our relationships with our primary carers.
