What We Know about the Effects of Foster Care

This article, published in the book ‘Assessing the Long-Term Effects of Foster Care: A Research Synthesis,’ provides an overview of the history of the foster care system in the United States and findings from multiple studies on the effects of foster care on children. The article discusses the historical role of government in foster care and research findings from 1960 to 1990 related to self-sufficiency, behavioral adjustment, family and social support, and personal wellbeing for children in foster care. The article discusses the implications of these findings and provides suggestions for next steps.
