Knowledge and Communication Specialist

The Better Care Network (BCN) is recognized as the preeminent information hub and global convener to influence action for children without adequate family care. BCN is an interagency initiative that facilitates global information exchange and collaboration among the growing number of organizations, governments, community groups, and individuals working to strengthen children’s care. BCN advocates for technically sound policy and programmatic action on global, regional, and national levels. The BCN website (bettercarenetwork.org) is the largest online collection of key research, tools, events and other documentation on issues related to strengthening family care and alternative care, designed to support academics, policymakers and practitioners alike. Its bi-monthly newsletter highlights recent research, practice, tools and the latest events and forthcoming opportunities.
Role purpose:
The BCN Knowledge and Communication Specialist is responsible for the day–to-day operation and development of BCN’s information platforms, including its website, newsletter, and social media outlets under the supervision of the BCN Director. The Specialist also takes a leading role on the development of communication and outreach material using new and innovative solutions to communicate effectively to BCN members and stakeholders relevant developments and good practices in this field. In addition, the Knowledge and Communication Specialist works closely with the Regional Coordinator of the Eastern and Southern Africa initiative to support practice based learning by practitioners through the Care 2 Practice online community and other initiatives in the region.
Qualifications and experience
- Educated to degree level / equivalent work experience in job related field including social work, international development, journalism, international human rights law or another relevant discipline.
- A minimum of 2 years of job related experience in the provision of services, knowledge management, and advocacy regarding the care and protection of vulnerable children and families, including relevant experience in at least one developing country context.
- Experience of outreach and communication with multiple partners in diverse contexts and across organizations and stakeholders.
- Familiarity and expertise with web-based content and management systems is essential, including expertise in the development of material/content for publication on a website and/or newsletter.
- Demonstrated skills mobilizing collaboration and coordination among organizations and individuals, particularly related to networks, clusters, and other similar groups.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a small team, and to solve complex problems.
- Demonstrated strong communication skills and the ability to communicate (written, spoken) between and across a diverse set of actors
- Strategic planning and organizational development skills
- Strong English writing skills
- Ability to travel up to 5 % to 10% of the time, locally, domestically and internationally
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary to fulfill the duties of this position.
Desirable
- Experience working in a child protection setting in both developed and developing country context and working with technical networks.
- Additional language skills; French or Spanish would be a particularly strong asset.
Contract: Full time
FLSA Status: Exempt
Location: New York, however, non-local candidates will be considered
