Australian Tara Winkler rethinks Cambodia's orphanages

Tara Winkler in an interview with Phil Kafcaloudes for Radio Australia

In this piece from Radio Australia, Phil Kafcaloudes interviews Tara Winkler, an Australian woman who set up an orphanage in Cambodia at the age of 21. After meeting children who had been sexually abused by another orphanage director and seeing the effects of institutionalization on children, however, she decided to make a change.  "I realised then, that no matter how good an orphanage is, the best place for a child is with his family,” she said. Her organization, Cambodian Children’s Trust (CCT), now provides education, health programs and support for poor families rather than contributing to the growing number of children’s institutions in Cambodia.
