Manitoba is trying an unconventional new approach to addressing the current foster care crisis in the aboriginal community, in which many children are being removed from their cultural communities. With this new solution, when a child protection worker is called to investigate a suspected case of child abuse, it is the parents who will be removed from the home, rather than the children. "Our policy is not to place blame on the parents because we recognize that our community and our people are still dealing with the intergenerational impacts of colonization, residential schools, and hydro development. We want to give parents the opportunity to seek help and to make families stronger in the end," said Misipawistik councillor Heidi Cook. According to the article, a care worker will be placed in the children’s homes to provide care in place of their parents, until the parents are able to return.
