Zanzibar’s Department of Social Welfare has announced a series of policies that it will implement in order to enhance the protection of children in alternative care in Zanzibar, particularly for residential care facilities. These new restrictions and protections come as a response to findings from a joint assessment of the number and nature of residential care institutions in Zanzibar, conducted by the Department of Social Welfare and Save the Children UK, which indicate a “number of inadequacies regarding the establishment and management of those homes.”
