Government officials of the Central Child Welfare Board (CCWB) of Nepal raided an orphanage in Kathmandu that was run by an NGO, according to this article from the Rising Nepal. Officials found that 16 children were living in the institution under terrible conditions and were not provided adequate food or living environment. Furthermore, says the article, the children were left at nights without a responsible adult to care for them. The officials from the CCWB have removed the children from the institution and will work on reintegrating these children with their families while the police search for the owners of the orphanage. “Here, the most important thing is that the CCWB and other responsible sectors have to regularly monitor child care homes and orphanages because it is a well-known fact that, in Nepal, orphanages are being run for earning money,” says the article.
This article sheds light on other, similar instances of negligence and inadequate care and living conditions for children in institutions in Nepal as well as the increasing use of orphanages for profit-making throughout the country. “Is an orphanage the real solution to manage these children?” asks the author.
