In March of 2018, officials in Bihar, India received a 100-page report about the condition of shelter homes in the state by Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), one of India's top social science schools, according to this article from BBC News. Officials investigated a home in the town of Muzaffarpur and found allegations of sexual abuse, among other "deplorable" conditions, at the facility housing 44 girls aged seven to 17. On 30 May, the girls were removed from the home and sent to three other homes elsewhere. Police have arrested local newspaper owner, Brajesh Thakur, who ran the home on charges of rape and sexual assault. Other staff members have also been arrested. The article also highlights other allegations of abuse and poor conditions in other children's homes in the state.
