Understanding Child Welfare as a Dynamic Hyper-Mobile Practice

Sharon Pinkney

Abstract

This chapter from 'New Directions in Children’s Welfare' applies the theorising emerging from mobilities discourses and applies them to children’s services. In particular it explores the idea of hyper-mobility of children who are Looked After. It also refers back to the child protection cases discussed in the earlier chapter to reflect on ways that mobilities paradigm helps us rethink child protection. I further explore this notion of social work and professional practice ‘on the move’ and propose that child protection and work with children in care is a hyper-mobile and dynamic practice. The significance of the in-between spaces in the landscape of care for children and young people is investigated. Additionally the consequences for professionals are reviewed.
