Thousands of siblings split up in care system

More than 12,000 children in care are not living with at least one of their siblings, according to this article from BBC News. While UK law says that siblings should be placed together, if possible, as it is usually in their best interests, data suggests this is not always happening. The article also suggests that the number is likely higher, as only two-thirds of the UK's local authorities with responsibilities for care responded to File on 4's Freedom of Information requests. "Figures also showed that at least 1,375 children who were placed for adoption between April 2018 and November 2019 had been separated from birth siblings."
