WHAT: Comprehensive tool for undertaking household surveys in order to assess the needs of caregivers and young children in communities affected by HIV/AIDS. The pack includes detailed guidance on conducting the survey and analyzing the data. It contains a training manual for preparing staff/surveyors, as well as data-entry software for child care analysis and report generation.
WHO: Social and community workers and program managers involved in a situation analysis of the needs of young children in communities affected by HIV and AIDS. Requires some previous experience with conducting surveys, interviewing, cluster sampling, and using computer data/report software.
WHERE: While created and tested by practitioners in Africa, this assessment tool is globally relevant. Survey forms are available in English, French, Kinyarwanda, and Swahili translations.
WHY: This is an excellent resource for understanding the types of resources and services most needed by children and their caregivers within communities. The survey collects data on a wide range of issues such as housing, food, clothes, bedding, daily activities, health, education, rights, childcare, child growth, and psychological well-being. The results should assist in building child care related program responses based on these needs.
N.B. Requires software for analyzing survey results and report generation. Software is available for download at: http://www.taskforce.org/hivdownload.asp
This survey is of households and will not capture information on children not living in households (e.g., children living on the street or in institutions).
