Guidelines for Foster Care

International Foster Care Organization (IFCO)

WHAT:  Procedural standards outlining the roles and responsibilities of foster care authorities and agencies.  It deals with how placements are set up, delivered and terminated.  It addresses the roles and responsibilities of foster care agencies, children in foster care, foster caregivers and birth parents.

WHO:  Policy makers and social and community workers involved in foster placement services.

WHERE:  Global relevance

WHY:  These guidelines provide a useful baseline from which to develop, monitor and evaluate foster care practice. 

N.B.  These guidelines are limited to the foster care placement and do not deal with work with birth families towards reunification while the child is in foster care.
