The Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare’s Department of Child Welfare and Probation Services in Zimbabwe is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced individuals or organisations to undertake a Baseline Survey on Children Deprived of Parental Care Living in Residential Child Care Facilities.

This report is based on a synthesis of eight assessments of the implementation of the Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children (“the Guidelines”) in Benin, Gambia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Togo, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Drawing on ethnographic research with five child heads and their siblings in Zimbabwe, this article explores how orphaned children living in ‘child only’ households organise themselves in terms of household domestic and paid work roles, explores the socialisation of children by children and the negotiation of teenage girls' movement.
