Since 2011, the government of Indian state Tamil Nadu has closed 843 unregistered child care institutions, with 1,300 registered homes still remaining. While 17,300 of the 18,500 children living in unregistered institutions returned to family, child protection experts express concern about the district's follow-up with children who have recently been reintegrated. Child rights campaigners estimate 200,000 children living in state care.
