This article describes how the Minister for Children, Disability and Equality in Ireland, Norma Foley, has announced the start of a consultation process for the forthcoming “National Policy Framework on Alternative Care” which aims to shape Ireland’s approach for the approximately 5,000 children in state care. The process will centre the voices of children and young people with care experience, as well as engaging stakeholders through focus groups, written submissions and other engagements. The framework, which began development in December 2024, is expected to be finalised by summer 2026 and reflects a whole‑of‑government vision to improve outcomes for children and care leavers.
