The Government of Brazil and the Global Movement for Children in Latin America and Caribbean (MMI LAC), hosted a regional Expert Consultation on Violence against Children and Care prior to the 21st Pan American Child and Adolescent Congress. Over 30 regional government and civil society experts participated in the regional consultation where they discussed progress and challenges related to care and violence against children. Together, the participants issued a joint statement which they presented to the 21st Pan American Child and Adolescent Congress, calling upon the Inter-American Child and Adolescent Institute (IIN) to engage fully in the implementation of the Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children and to ensure a de-institutionalisation process for children under the age of three. As a result of the joint statement, the 21st Pan-American Congress included commitments related to violence against children in alternative care as part of its Unified Resolution.
