Preventing Child Maltreatment: A Guide to Taking Action and Generating Evidence

International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN)

As much of the violence endured by children occurs in the home, researching and combating child maltreatment is a tricky and complex endeavour. Evidence-based responses are context specific, sustainable and can generate new evidence to enhance further policy developments.

This guide provides practical information and tools on how to:

  • measure the extent of child maltreatment and its consequences
  • design, implement and evaluate preventative measures
  • detect the problem and respond accordingly
  • minimise long-term negative impacts on children
  • provide ongoing care to victims and families
  • prevent the reoccurrence of violence.

The guide is intended for policy-makers and programme planners working at national, provincial and municipal levels in the sectors of health, social services and the law.
