This Act was established by the Government of Zanzibar to "provide for the rights and best interests of the child; to provide for the establishment of children's courts; to consolidate and expand on provisions relating to the care and protection of vulnerable children and children in conflict with the law; to provide for parentage, custody, guardianship, access to, maintenance, foster care and adoption of children; to provide for special protection measures in respect of children; to provide consent to medical intervention in respect of children; to provide for approved schools, residential establishments and day care centres; and to provide for matters incidental thereto."
