How filmmaking can support advocacy: The Voluntourist and orphanage tourism

Chloe Sanguinetti - Modern Day Slavery and Orphanage Tourism

Abstract : This chapter from the book Modern Day Slavery and Orphanage Tourism draws on the author's film The Voluntourist that has arguably been pivotal in raising the groundswell of objection to orphanage tourism. The film follows young international volunteers in Southeast Asia, working in childcare and construction projects over short periods of time. The overall purpose of the film is to raise awareness of the potential harmful impacts of voluntourism and spark a debate around solutions and/or alternatives. The aim is not to discourage people from helping, but rather to critically ascertain the best ways to do it. These themes also underline this chapter.
