Conference Program

The panel discussion will form part of the South African National Association of Child and Youth Care Worker’s 20th Biennial Conference taking place in Cape Town. The conference celebrates 40 years of advocacy on behalf of South Africa’s children and youth, and toward the development and professionalization of child and youth care work in South Africa.

The session will include:

  • Professor Jim Anglin, PhD, Professor, School of Child and Youth Care, University of Victoria, Canada: definitional framework  for child and youth care work;

  • Dr. Thom Garfat, PhD, Consultant: characteristics of child and youth care work;

  • Ms. Zeni Thumbadoo, MA, Deputy Director, NACCW: para-social service competencies developed by the Global Social Service Workforce Alliance;

  • Mr. Jack Phelan, MA: supervision of child and youth care workers;

  • Rev. Robert Sihubwa, BTh Hon, Chairperson of the Zambian Association of Child Care Workers (ZACCW): development work of the ZACCW;

  • Ms. Aziwe Magida; Msc., Chairperson of Professional Board for Child and Youth Care: statutory regulation of South African child and youth care workers.

  • The session will moderated by Zeni Thumbadoo, Deputy Director, NACCW, and Vice Chairperson of the Global Social Service Workforce Alliance Steering Committee.
