The Advocacy Advisor will work in the New York Office of SOS Children’s Villages International. Under the guidance of the Representative to the United Nations the advisor will work on a range of activities aimed at positioning SOS CV target group within UN member states, UN Agencies and other partners. The advocacy advisor will engage with external partners and manage relations with key actors issuing recommendations for strategic engagement and content development.
The Advocacy Advisor will be responsible for the following duties:
- Engage with relevant UN processes such as the Commission on Social Development or ECOSOC segments, as well as the UNGA main Committees (especially Third Committee) and put in place a strategy to influence the resolutions issued by these bodies.
- Coordinate and contribute to documents and publications needed to advocate towards influencing child and youth related resolutions such as the third committee resolution on the rights of the child and other relevant documents that have an impact in the life of children and young people without parental care or the general provision of alternative care.
- Work with partners and participate in networks to ensure support for the goals of the organization and its engagement with relevant partners.
- Prepare various written communications, e.g. information notes, background papers, talking points, inputs to publications, etc.
- Coordinate and prepare internal and external communication materials about the work of the NY/UN office in collaboration with relevant colleagues from other departments.
- Assist with results-based planning and reporting, keeping track of the work monitoring system.
- Undertake administrative and other tasks as needed.
Working knowledge of the UN system, especially the work and functioning of the UN General Assembly and it subsidiary bodies; good knowledge of the main current developments at the UN system and topics in the agenda such as the SDGs and Agenda 2030; capacity to research about events and developments in the UN system in a fast and efficient way.
Experience working with and understanding of the process for drafting and negotiating UN documents.
Experience advocating for groups of people in vulnerable situations; experience working on development issues from a policy, research and/or advocacy perspective.
Advanced University degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in political science, international relations, law, public administration, international development or related fields. A first level university degree in combination with four additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in international affairs is required. Experience working with the UN or on UN Advocacy is essential. Experience working around the UNGA Second or Third committees highly valued and desired.
Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of French and or Spanish is desirable.
