‘The children are not safe here’: the Nigerian couple fighting infanticide

Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani - The Guardian

This article tells the story of Nigerian missionaries Olusola and Chinwe Stevens, who have spent three decades rescuing babies and young children in central Nigeria from harmful traditional beliefs that label them as “cursed” and sometimes lead to infanticide. Based near Abuja, their Vine Heritage Home Foundation now shelters over 200 children—many abandoned or at risk after their mothers died in childbirth—offering care, protection and advocacy in the face of deep-rooted cultural taboos, community denial, and limited government support. The piece explores both the life-saving compassion of the couple’s work and the ongoing challenges of changing attitudes, securing resources, and reintegrating children into communities still grappling with these beliefs.
