Government to consider slapping ban after European ruling

Carl O'Brien - The Irish Times

This article from the Irish Times explains that the Council of Europe has ruled that the lack of a clear ban on corporal punishment in Ireland is a violation of children’s rights and the European Social Charter. In response to this ruling, says the article, the Minister for Children in Ireland has vowed to “explicitly ban the smacking of children in foster or residential care through new regulations.” The Council of Europe is expected to issue a formal resolution noting the children’s rights violations.
