This article describes the work of the Women’s Prison Association (WPA), an organization for women impacted by incarceration in the U.S., and shares the stories of five women and their families who have been supported by the organization. The article calls particular attention to the WPA's Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI) initiative, which offers programming designed entirely around keeping women in their communities instead of jail or prison. As the article notes, "the prison system—built, as it is, upon isolation and family separation—frequently forces women to choose between serving their sentences and being active participants in their children’s lives."
