Israel Evacuates Surrogate Babies From Nepal but Leaves the Mothers Behind

Debra Kamin - Time

This article, from Time, describes the efforts of the Israeli government to evacuate babies of Israeli parents - born to surrogate mothers in Nepal - in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. According to the article, 15 Israeli babies born within the last 6 weeks to surrogate mothers were evacuated from Nepal on a recent flight. The surrogate mothers, however, were not permitted to travel. “The rescue process, coupled with widely published photos of the newborns being cradled by Israeli medics on the Tel Aviv tarmac, has thrust Israel’s reliance on Nepalese surrogates into the spotlight, revealing a little known link between Nepal and Israel and starting a debate here about the ethics of international surrogacy,” says the author.
