OAfrica, a local NGO in Ghana has donated 117, 000GHC to Ghana’s Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in order to help relocate the children who were formerly residing at the Bawjiase Orphanage that has recently come under investigation for reported abuses. The abuses were exposed by undercover investigative reporter, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, and brought to the attention of the Ministry. Anas conducted a similar investigation on the Osu Children’s Home in 2010. “OAfrica condemns the criminal abuse Anas has revealed at Bawjiase Orphanage and calls for the complete eradication of orphanages in the country by 2020,” the NGO said in a press release on 3 February. OAfrica is also calling on the Ghanaian government and UNICEF to support efforts to “close down illegal orphanages and provide support for families to care for their children.”
